WASHINGTON (AP) — Charlie McAvoy scored twice and Fraser Minten had the shootout winner as the Boston Bruins beat the Washington Capitals 3-2 on Saturday. Minten beat Washington's Logan Thompson with a backhand shot in the ninth round of the shootout to give the Bruins their third win in five games and help Boston gain ground in the Eastern Conference wild-card race.

The Bruins soon found the 1-1 equalizer thanks to McAvoy. David Pastrnak pushed the puck up to McAvoy at the top of the zone, where he one-timed it past Washington netminder Logan Thompson at 11:57. It extended McAvoy’s point streak to six games, and Pastrnak’s to five.

The Boston Bruins earned their 13th straight victory at home, 2-1 over the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night.
