The National Weather Service in Honolulu issued a Flash Flood Warning Friday morning for Oahu, citing local law enforcement reports of an imminent failure of Wahiawa Dam.
Honolulu officials told residents in an emergency message to leave the area downstream of Wahiawa Dam, because it's failing or expected to soon fail. The warning told residents to carpool because of heavy traffic.
Authorities issued urgent evacuation orders on Oahu’s North Shore after a potential failure at Wahiawa Dam threatened life-threatening flooding. Residents in Haleiwa and Waialua were told to evacuate immediately as flooding was reported along nearby streams.
Hawaiʻi's proposal to acquire the dam, and have taxpayers foot the bill for repairs, let the company off the hook.
