Around AD 1000, Norse sailors reached what is now Newfoundland, building turf huts at L’Anse aux Meadows for a short time. Scientists studied cut wood there and dated it to AD 1021 using tree rings and evidence of a solar storm. Indigenous peoples lived across the Americas long before, but the Vikings arrived almost 500 years before Columbus’s 1492 voyage. Their settlement shows that skilled navigation and exploration brought Europeans to North America much earlier than commonly thought. #thefac
